The quiet tourist town of Stewiacke is located in Colchester County, central Nova Scotia, two miles east of the confluence of the Stewiacke and Shubenacadie Rivers, exactly half-way between the North Pole and the equator. The town is located just 50 minutes from the city of Halifax, and has an approximate population of 1,500.

There is a common misconception that the name of our town means "winding river". The name "Stewiacke" (pronounced something like stew-yak) is actually derived from the native Mikmaq word "Estiktaweak" which meant "it oozed slowly out from still water".

While Stewiacke is a small town, it still offers all the amenities visitors are looking for. The town boasts two service stations, several fast-food restaurants, nearby camping facilities, convenience stores, a local library featuring free public computer access, two popular pubs, a grocery store, a pharmacy, a town park/playground, and more. We are also only a 20 minute drive from the "Hub of Nova Scotia", Truro, and less than an hour from the capital city of Halifax.

Stewiacke is also home to many tourist attractions including a life-size replica of a mastodon, the exact half-way point between the North Pole and the equator, a local shop which features live goats on the roof, the beautiful Stewiacke river, the Stewiacke River Park, murals of days gone-by which were prepared by the local elementary school, and a self-guided historic walking tour.

The town was origninally part of two lots which were granted to Francis and Henry Ellis in 1765. The town was not officially incorporated until 1906, and is now coming up quickly on it's 100 year anniversary of incorporation.
